FX guide, one of my favorite sites, did an outstanding article about the growing trend with visual effects films and stereoscopic 3D. It covers allot of ground from pre to post production and is an excellent resource. Give it a good read and you might see some quotes in there from myself.
*Update* I will be rolling out my new training series and companion site the3dfool.com I will be posting free tutorial movies and selling longer more expanded training dvd’s for stereoscopic visual effects work. I expect to have the first ones available within the next few weeks.

Apple Insider has uncovered some cool patents from Apple. They are planning on producing an auto stereoscopic monitor display for high end visualization applications. This could mean allot of things, but what it means to me is that Apple has the means and cool factor to bring a mass market product that could bring 3D more into the main stream than ever before. Now this is one possibility, but apple does produce high end software and products for the niche markets as well.

Digital projection systems are going to expand under a new agreement, almost 14,000 movie screens within the next year. Reuters reported on Sunday, and will cost almost $1.1 billion. The screen in the new deal are owned by Regal Entertainment, Cinemark, and AMC Entertainment. These systems can be upgaded to Real D 3-D movies. It quoted Michael Lewis, chairman of Real D projection systems, as saying, “3-D is the big game changer and the compelling reason for doing digital cinema.” Currently there are fewer than 1,000 theaters capable of showing movies using the 3-D digital system.

Speed Racer by the Wachowski brothers has two new international trailers out today that show allot more of the movie. Wow. I’m really looking forward to seeing this one. It really looks like the cartoon has been brought to life. These are stunning visuals that have a hyper kinetic Anime feel to them. I love the use of the graphical motion blurred backgrounds coupled with the ramp into and out of slow motion. The colors really pop and with this film coming to IMAX this is going to be a truly unique film.

Now there’s the crowd out there that says, “this is cheesy, plastic, and childish” they are sad people who have no imagination. This is a film based on a cheaply animated Japanese kids cartoon from the 60’s. What the Wachowski’s have done is fleshed out the universe and kept the animated cartoon look. I think this will be terrific. Photorealism and creating this that look “Real” is so over. I think realism is missing the point. We go to movies to escape. We don’t see them so we can see the real world. We see what’s real in front of our noses every day. The fantastic, the impossible, the improbable, is what I crave to see. Creating a world thats gritty and realistic but fantastic, is just one way to express a creative vision, like in The Matrix. Creating a world thats brightly colorfully violent and cartoonish is another way to express ones vision. Neither right, nor wrong, just different.
A vision I’d like to visit on May 9th.

Thats right, there is plans afoot for a sequels to the 1981 computer animated opus TRON. Not only will we get to see a sequel with all the fancy effects modern CG and digital compositing can offer us, but the added bonus of 3D. TRON 3D: It was reported last year that
Commercial director Joseph Kosinski was in talks to direct next TRON. It may or maybe not a direct sequel. Word is that Disney is planning to release the film in Digital Disney 3D (aka Real D ) in 2011. Lets just hope the “TRON Guy” Pictured right will make a cameo.

I’m trying out word press now. I’m going to see how this work for me over blogger. I like having more control over the look and feel of my blog, but I don’t want my server to get overloaded. I’ll worry about that when I start getting serious traffic. So in the mean time if you are a visitor, you may see allot of changes in format and color over the next week as I settle into the new look.
