TD Vision update

Posted by Daniel Smith on 23 May 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Tech

TD Vision has some interesting tech. I’m really interested in where they are going with their 2D/3D codec and how this can bring about mass media production of 3D stereoscopic films for HD home video.

WanderLust 3D

Posted by Daniel Smith on 22 Apr 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Animation

Bjork is at it again. Wanderlust, the Icelandic’s singer’s newest photoplay is avaialble from Wired. They have the full video on its website in a whopping 188 mb file. It has to be that large to allow for the best color fidelity for anaglyph presentation. This video evokes Miyazaki influences and odd organic textures. Truly the only way to view this is in 3D. I wish they opted for a side by side version. :(

Danimation Updates

Posted by Daniel Smith on 21 Apr 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Site News

The front page of Danimation.com has been updated to reflect my consultation and 3D stereography business. I have selected some projects I’ve supervised to highlight, and I will be building pages describing each project a bit more in detail in the future. I will be adding details like techniques used, format, and some 3D anaglyphic stills from each project.  Be sure to check it out, click on the pic to go there.

Posted by Daniel Smith on 02 Apr 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Site News

Well I just upgraded to the latest word press 2.5 The updates on the site have been a bit slow lately. I’m working on a big article that I hope to publish next week about creating your own home 1080p 3D system for under $2500. Yes this can be done, and I will show you how step by step. Also I have been working on the companion site, the3dfool.com, developing content for my tutorial series. Busy busy busy. The world of 3D stereoscopic is exploding. There are so many new films being put into production. In the mean time I have a 3D pic below for your enjoyment

FX Guide Stereo Article

header2007_01.gifFX guide, one of my favorite sites, did an outstanding article about the growing trend with visual effects films and stereoscopic 3D. It covers allot of ground from pre to post production and is an excellent resource. Give it a good read and you might see some quotes in there from myself. :)

*Update* I will be rolling out my new training series and companion site the3dfool.com I will be posting free tutorial movies and selling longer more expanded training dvd’s for stereoscopic visual effects work. I expect to have the first ones available within the next few weeks.

Apple to go 3D

Posted by Daniel Smith on 20 Mar 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Tech

apple-logo1.jpg

Apple Insider has uncovered some cool patents from Apple. They are planning on producing an auto stereoscopic monitor display for high end visualization applications. This could mean allot of things, but what it means to me is that Apple has the means and cool factor to bring a mass market product that could bring 3D more into the main stream than ever before. Now this is one possibility, but apple does produce high end software and products for the niche markets as well.

Thats right, there is plans afoot for a sequels to the 1981 computer animated opus TRON. Not only will we get to see a sequel with all the fancy effects modern CG and digital compositing can offer us, but the added bonus of 3D. TRON 3D: It was reported last year that tron.jpgCommercial director Joseph Kosinski was in talks to direct next TRON. It may or maybe not a direct sequel. Word is that Disney is planning to release the film in Digital Disney 3D (aka Real D ) in 2011. Lets just hope the “TRON Guy” Pictured right will make a cameo.

Enable3D

Posted by Daniel Smith on 28 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Tech

enable3d.jpgNEC and Magnetic announced the creation of a new glasses free technology to display 3D content without any lose of resolution for 2D content. There are no details on what the system is doing, but if this is different than the lenticular based 3D screens found in other glasses free systems, this could be a huge boom to the 3D movement. I’m going to try to get more details on this system and add more as I find out.

3D Camera Sensor

Posted by Daniel Smith on 22 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Cameras

So the guys at Stanford have come up with a CMOS sensor that takes an array of images and distills it into a deep pixel format image. Then you can extract multiple 3D depth images, refocus, recompose the final image. This would be an ultimate raw camera image. Only caveat is its sub resolution. If the sensor it 10 mega pixels, then a 10×10 array subdivides the resolution into 100 sub pictures. Not quite ready for prime time but this is very promising. Check the link for more detail.

Journey 3D Trailer

Posted by Daniel Smith on 19 Feb 2008 | Tagged as: 3D, Movies

I’m sorry but this film looks bad. I saw this same trailer before the re-release of Nightmare before Christmas 3D. My professional opinion is this film will set the 3D movement back. The trailer was overwrought with frame violations too much parallax, and bad gimmicks. There was more eyestrain in this 2 minute trailer than I have seen in the last 20 years of 3D cinema. It might be a fun movie, but I think I will see it in 2D.
